EXTRA - Mensuel - sept 1972 - N° 22 (monthly, September 1972 issue #22)
T.Rex Soon in ParisSimeon Feld, better known as Marc Bolan, was lately in Paris. He kindly answered a few questions: B.D. : You are in France for recording your next single, I've been told? M.B.: Not exactly, I am here for recording, that's that! I hope recording 6 to 8 tracks, and among those tracks I will choose our next single. Nothing is really definitive, I often finish composing a song when recording it. B.D.: When you look back at your carreer, have you the feeling the road has been long up until now? The fact the whole press finally agreed that you and T.Rex were the biggest thing since the Beatles didn't make you rest on your laurels? M.B.: Whatever you try to do, it's always a surprise when you finally meet success beyond what you ever expected. That's a first point. Secondly, all that road might well be only a start, and all I still have got to achieve is maybe even more. The press is not that unanimous. My last record got good critics only from 2 English weekly magazines, on 4. B.D.: We live a time when politics are important, even in music. Will you follow the path of John Lennon et al.? M.B.: I don't need this. To me, John Lennon, in "Working Man's Dead" or "Sometimes In New York City" is only echoing sad and simple news from the papers, nothing more. The only song I've written in that style is "Freedom", and I don't think it's a protest song. I do prefer what the Stones write. B.D.: Do you follow the records or concerts of the English Music scene? M.B.: I do not have much free time. And when I have some, I tend to keep it for composing my own songs. Of course I listen to records, and sometimes I attend a concert. Last time it was for the Stones, in Memphis. That was really great indeed! B.D.: What is the average age of your audiences? M.B.: They are very young, far younger than the Who's audience, for instance. When you're 16 to 25, you don't shout constantly, as did the Wembley audience. They shouted so well that we hardly heard ourselves playing. Before watching T.Rex in a movie theater, as fimed by Ringo Starr, The Parisian audience will be able to cheer and clap for Marc, Micky Finn, Steve Currie and Bill Legend at the Olympia, on 4rth September, on the occasion of 2 Musicoramas (gigs) at 7:30 and 10:30 pm.
